Historically the UK water and sewage industry has looked towards traditional
ductile iron materials to solve its process pipework needs. However, whilst in
many instances this is still the most suitable and economical option, serious
consideration should be given to the fabricated mild steel alternative, which
can offer several significant advantages.
The availability and cost of large diameter ductile iron pipework and fittings
can sometimes prove prohibitive. In many cases
the equivalent component can be fabricated in mild steel materials resulting in
improved lead times and offering significant
cost savings.
The number of individual ductile iron fittings required to achieve a complex pipework configuration can be excessive, resulting
in increased bolt set costs and on site assembly charges. Mild steel offers the
distinct advantage of rationalising several flanged fittings into one single
common fabrication. This reduces the number of flanged joints, bolt set and
gasket costs and valuable on site installation time. The mild steel solution is
particularly useful for the construction of pump discharge manifolds,
complicated crossover connections and valve chamber piepwork.
Mild steel is versatile and allows the addition of flanged branches, tie
flanges, puddle flanges, supports and small-bore instrumentation connections at
minimal time and cost.
On site modifications to accommodate dimensional inaccuracies of structures,
design errors and design changes are easily undertaken with mild steel
materials.
Individual mild steel pipe spools can be supplied as a single piece fabrication
up to 12-metres in length (and longer).
